Iridium

The IRIDIUM system, a global, mobile, wireless communications system, conceived by three Motorola engineers consits of handheld subscriber telephones, a constellation of 66 satellites, a complete ground infrastructure and all supporting software.

The IRIDIUM system is the first commercial satellite system to include:

A large low-Earth orbiting constellation
Inter-satellite links
Onboard processing
Phased-array antennas

The Iridium system comprised of a constellation of 66 LEO spacecraft. The system uses L-Band to provide global communications services through portable handsets. Total cost of the project was over $4 billion.

The system closed recently after being unable to attract enought subscibers.The satellites will be allowed to burn up in the atmosphere.
